Survey of Fields Linked to a Research Program in Sociotherapy

Sociotherapy does not currently have its own research program, but related research is nonetheless being conducted within various fields. These fields are quite isolated and tend not to communicate with one another. The fields closest to sociotherapy are clinical sociology and the research already conducted there on sociotherapy; sociology, informed social work (critical social work); food studies; critical psychiatry; psychosocial studies; social psychiatry and social medicine; special education; and critical psychology as an umbrella term for, for example, community psychology and social materialist psychology. Below is an overview of what has been researched in these areas to date. The conclusion drawn from all these areas is that a great deal of research has been conducted that incorporates social and cultural aspects and integrates sociology in various ways. What is missing is systematic research on sociotherapy, just as psychotherapy has a clear research program within psychology.
